Infant CPR

Knowing how to perform infant CPR can save a baby’s life in an emergency. The American Heart Association (AHA) and Go Life Savers, LLC stress rapid, correct action makes a huge difference. Follow these steps to act quickly and effectively.

Step 1: Check the Scene and Baby

First, check that the area is safe for you and the baby. Tap the sole of the infant’s foot or shout to see if they respond. Call out for help right away.

Step 2: Check Breathing

Look at the baby’s chest for 5 to 10 seconds to see if it is rising and falling normally. If the baby is not breathing or is only gasping, they need CPR.

Step 3: Call 911 and Get an AED

If you are alone and have a phone, put it on speaker and call 9-1-1. Ask someone to bring an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is nearby.

Step 4: Give 30 Chest Compressions

Place the baby face-up on a firm, flat surface. Place your two thumbs side-by-side in the center of the chest, right below the nipple line. Wrap your fingers around the baby’s rib cage to support their back. Push down hard and fast. You want to push about 1.5 inches deep. Do this 30 times at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

Step 5: Give 2 Rescue Breaths

Gently tilt the infant’s head back to a neutral or slightly sniffing position and lift the chin to open the airway. Avoid tilting the head too far back, as this can block a baby’s small airway. Place your mouth over both the infant’s nose and mouth to create a tight seal. Deliver two gentle breaths, each lasting about one second, while watching for the chest to rise.

Step 6: Repeat the Cycle

Continue the cycles of 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths. If two rescuers are present, the ratio may change to 15 compressions and 2 breaths. Do not interrupt CPR until the infant starts to breathe, moves, or professional medical help arrives to take over. If an AED becomes available, turn it on and follow the voice prompts immediately.
